Gerald W. Burkett, 83, of Lehighton, went to the Lord Sunday, May 26, 2019, in his home. He was the husband of the late Isabell M. (Schnell) Burkett, who went to the Lord on February 19, 2015. Prior to retiring, he was employed by the former New England Motor Freight, Francis Deem Excavating, International Distribution, Interstate Dress Carrier and Keystone Lamp. Born in Lehighton, he was the son of the late Mervin and Myrtle (Schmick) Burkett. He was a member of Ben Salem UCC, Lehighton, where he served as former Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Superintendent and a member of the church choir for 50 years. He was an Army veteran and served at the Headquarters of the 165 M.P. Battalion where he worked in the Motor Pool. He also served in the National Guard as a M.P. He enjoyed bicycling, lifting weights, working on, washing and waxing his cars. He took pride in building his own home. He loved helping his family, the church and most of all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Ralph. Surviving are two sons, Gerald T. Burkett and his wife Kimberlee, of Tamaqua, and Todd A. and his wife Mary, of Lehighton; a daughter, Lana wife of Patrick Gallagher, of Lehighton; seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11am on Thursday, May 30, 2019, at Ben Salem UCC, 1965 Church Hill Rd, Lehighton, PA 18235, with the Rev. Michael McGowan officiating. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday, from 6-8pm and on Thursday, from 10-11am. Interment with military honors will be in the church cemetery.
